Water play seems to be beneficial in the early childhood development, namely, in developing a child’s fine and gross motors skills, encourages the ability in problem-solving, enhances language development, fosters social-emotional growth and also encourages learning of science and mathematics.

Water play helps to boost fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination through the pouring activity and as they squad and jump in the play area, their gross motor skills will be developed. As the children negotiate and make decisions on turn taking, they learn about problem-solving skills. The discussions and conversations among the children will also help to heighten their language development ability. As the children engage in cooperative play, they learn to share and thus help to improve their social-emotional development. Children will also be exposed to science and mathematics as they learn certain things may sink or float in the water and when they learn the amount of water in the water play area, for example, full, empty or half, they learn about mathematics.

The introduction of systematic water play at the kindergarten beginning this academic year hopes to provide an additional activity to hone the skills of our children, besides it being an exciting outdoor activity which all children will always look forward to.
