Sri Bestari Private School: Secondary

Secondary School Curriculum

The school offers the Malaysian National Curriculum in KSSM (Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Menengah) where English is the medium of instruction for Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Science, Physics, Biology and Chemistry. Therefore, as an example for a Pure Science student at Upper Secondary, 6 out of 9 subjects are conducted in English and the SPM Exam papers are also in English. The English Language is based on the Common European Framework CEFR level of English.

Students will have to sit for the comprehensive exams for all KSSM subjects for Form 1 to Form 3 which is called the Ujian Akhir Sesi Akademik UASA and SPM at Form 5. All the UASA and SPM Exams are set by the Lembaga Peperiksaan Malaysia.

Due to the fact that English is so widely used, students at Lower Secondary have the additional option to sit for the Cambridge Checkpoint 2 Exam covering 3 subjects which are English as a Second Language, Mathematics and Science. The English language taught at Lower Secondary is based on the CEFR level while at Upper Secondary, the school also adopts the Cambridge English on top of the CEFR English.

Upper Secondary students can also choose to sit for the Cambridge IGCSE Exam besides SPM. Many use this as a gauge in preparation for the SPM and even use the IGCSE Results to gain entry to further education immediately after the SPM sitting without even having to wait the release of the SPM results. Extra after school classes are carried out for students who are attempting the Cambridge Checkpoint 2 starting from Form 1. Extra classes for IGCSE are also carried out after school. These additional classes carried out after school are very much sought after.

All students will have to choose one additional language besides Bahasa Malaysia and English language in Chinese, French, Japanese or Korean.

Secondary School Examinations

Every Semester there is a Mid-Semester Assessment as well as an End-Semester Examination. Reports Cards are issued for each Assessment and Examination where parents will meet the teachers to discuss their child’s achievement and progress. Therefore, there are 3 formal assessments/examinations all students will have to sit besides the school based assessments, projects and the physical health assessment termed SEGAK.

Starting from 2022, the Ministry of Education has introduced the Ujian Akhir Sesi Akademik UASA for Form 1 to Form 3 covering all subjects. This examination is set by the Lembaga Peperiksaan Malaysia and conducted at the end of the Second Semester and is taken as the Year End-Semester Examination. However, there are some subjects that are not covered under UASA such as STEM where the school will conduct  their own Examination as well to ensure all subjects studied are properly assessed.

Examination at Form 5, SPM

National Examination

The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia SPM, or the Malaysian Certificate of Education is a national examination taken by all fifth-form secondary school students in Malaysia. It is the equivalent to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) in British Isle and GCE Ordinary Level in the Commonwealth of Nations. It is the leaving examination of the eleventh grade of schooling.

SPM is the penultimate examination sat by students at the age of 17 before they go on to further their studies at a Foundation Program, Form 6, Matriculation or A-Levels. The examination is set and examined by the Malaysian Examinations Board or known as Lembaga Peperiksaan Malaysia.

Cambridge Checkpoint Test

Optional Exam for Form 3 students

The Cambridge Checkpoint 2 Examination is an optional exam and is for students who are in Form 3. Cambridge Checkpoint tests have been designed to assess learners at a certain age or level. The subjects tested are for English as a Second Language, Mathematics and Science. The test provides valuable feedback on the candidates strengths and weaknesses before they progress on to the next stage.

The test papers are marked by Cambridge Assessment and it provides the schools with an external international benchmark that helps us evaluate learners’ performance. Each learner receives a statement of achievement and a diagnostic test performance feedback report.

For students who are keen to sit for the Cambridge Checkpoint 2 Examination, preparatory after school classes are conducted starting from Form 1. There are dedicated assessments students will have to sit for and separate report cards are issued for all students by the school.

IGCSE Examination

Enroll for Pre-University Studies

IGCSE is the abbreviation for International General Certificate of Secondary Education. It is a very popular international certification for the end of secondary school before a student proceeds to Advanced Level or Pre-university studies. The IGCSE curriculum is often considered more similar to O-Level rather than the UK national curriculum’s GCSE and it is very comprehensive.

Sri Bestari Private School Kuala Lumpur students at 16 and 17 years old have an option to attempt some IGCSE papers in addition to SPM at Form 5. For students who have chosen this option, additional after school classes are carried out by our team of very experienced teachers in preparing students for these examinations. It does require some discipline to prepare for 2 examinations in SPM and IGCSE. However, because the syllabuses overlap in approximately 85% and subjects such as Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Science, Physics, Chemistry and Biology are in English under the KSSM Curriculum this effort is rather seamless. Some students use IGCSE as an additional assessment in preparation for SPM, similar to an additional trial SPM examination.

The benefit of having this Dual Certification for SPM students is their ability to utilise the IGCSE Certificate to enroll with a college or for Pre-University studies immediately after completing the SPM examination sitting even before the SPM results are released some months later.

New South Wales Examination

Based on the Australian Curriculum

The New South Wales NSWE Examination papers are prepared and marked based on the Australian curriculum. It is continuously promoted as a standards-referenced approach to assessing and reporting student achievement.

The NSWE Examination is open to all students from Primary Year 3 right up to Secondary Form 5. The subjects include are Mathematics, Science, English and Computer Skills. Students are not allowed to opt for individual subjects and must sit for four papers. The duration for each test paper is 1 hour and the exam is conducted as scheduled by New South Wales Education Standards Authority and is internationally recognised..
